ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

Christine Beard - Working in the field for over thirty years, Chris has developed a strong background in all aspects of historic preservation. While earning a Masters degree from the University of Pennsylvania, she was employed by the Clio Group to conduct paint and mortar analyses of historic structures. Chris continued her preservation work in Boston as a consultant for the Architectural Conservation Trust for Massachusetts, preparing historic tax credit applications and National Register nominations. She subsequently cofounded Tremont Preservation Services, where she was fortunate enough to work on a wide range of interesting and challenging projects over a period of twenty years before establishing Essex Preservation Consulting.

Chris Closs - Chris has directed his own preservation planning and development consulting business in both NH and now Maine, since 1979. He has advised on historic tax credits for more than 40 years and managed 69 Certified Rehabilitations exceeding $310 million in public and private investment. He was the Preservation Planner with the National Trust’s New England Regional Office in Boston from 1977 - 1979; and later led the formation of the NH Main Street Program and was its founding chair (1994-1997). In 2007 - 2009 he served as Adjunct Professor in Historic Preservation at Plymouth State University. Chris holds a BA from Boston University, and MS degrees in Natural Resource Planning and Historic Preservation from the University of Vermont. Chris is also a talented restoration carpenter and stonemason, having rehabilitated two older properties, including the historic, five-building John Clay Farmstead in Candia, NH where he applied both a preservation covenant and conservation easements protecting the property in perpetuity upon future re-sale.

Scott Hanson - Scott Hanson is a senior associate at MacRostie in Boston, working from Maine. His work includes preparing state and federal historic rehabilitation tax credit applications, National Register nominations, and preservation consulting services for museums and institutions.

As an Architectural Historian and Director of Historic Preservation Consulting Services for Sutherland Conservation & Consulting in Maine from 2010 to 2020, Scott worked on more than 50 historic tax credit projects, wrote or co-wrote 28 National Register nominations, and researched and wrote 17 Maine Historic Building Record documentation reports. He prepared successful National Park Service certifications for local historic districts in Portland, Maine, and New York City. From 2005-2010, he was Preservation Planner for the City of Portland, Maine.

Scott’s best-selling book, Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners, won the 2020 Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance “Excellence in Publishing” award. Previously, he co-authored two books, The Architecture of Cushing's Island and Homes Down East, Classic Maine Coastal Cottages and Town Houses, with Maine State Historian Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr.

Scott studied at Pratt Institute's School of Art and Design and has utilized his background in design, architectural history, and restoration carpentry in a wide variety of positions. He received a Statewide Historic Preservation Honor Award from Maine Preservation and a Greater Portland Landmarks Preservation Award for his work with the City of Portland's historic preservation program. His projects with Sutherland Conservation & Consulting won numerous Maine Preservation Honor Awards.
