Old Building Forum: Built (and Adapted) to Last

Built (and Adapted) to Last: Energy Efficiency & Policy Updates

Join us for our final Old Building Forum of 2026! Our staff will share updates to our energy efficiency guide as well as the latest on our advocacy efforts to expand Maine’s Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit. Brad Miller, Maine Preservation’s Director of Programs & Services will introduce our revamped Guidelines for Improving Energy Efficiency in Historic Buildings—a informational booklet outlining best practices for reducing energy consumption, including the embrace of historic technologies. This is an incredible resource for old home stewards looking to make modifications for seasonal weather while maintaining unique historic features. Tara Kelly, Maine Preservation’s Executive Director, will then share our plans to introduce historic tax credit legislation for the third time in Augusta. Our bill passed the House and Senate back in April but was left unfunded on the Appropriations Table. The bill would improve the existing state historic rehabilitation tax credit and create Maine's first-ever historic homeowner tax program to help unlock housing and revitalization in communities from Kittery to Fort Kent. This session, we are headed back to State House—third time’s a charm! Learn more about the proposed bill and how you may be able to help.
