Preservation and Climate Change

The greenest building is one that already exists.

The impacts of global warming in Maine will have dire consequences not just for our natural environment. Our historic buildings, communities and cultural landscapes are equally threatened by rising sea levels and shifting climate patterns. Maine State Legislators and communities across our state are taking a leadership role in tackling some of the problems caused by global warming.

Maine Preservation is committed to engaging citizens statewide in this complex issue. We believe that preserving the historic built environment is the greenest gift we can leave for future generations.

On May 11 th and 12 th 2007, The Maine Preservation Conference will be held in Bangor, bringing together a broad coalition of concerned preservationists on this topic. As the conference plans begin to take shape we will post information on our website. Using and reusing historic buildings is the most effective form of recycling.
