How Can You Help?

Get involved to make a difference!  You can help in several ways, such as being a member, making a donation, volunteering, or considering a gift of legacy to Maine Preservation in your Will.

Financial donations may be made to Maine Preservation in the form of:

  • Cash gifts
  • Memberships at any level. Maine Preservation offers special student memberships (under 20 only) at $20, and individual memberships beginning at the $35 level. Business memberships begin at $100.
  • Gift Memberships at any level. Maine Preservation will notify the recipient with a gift card and welcome packet.
  • Sponsorships of programs, events, publications and our quarterly newsletter, Maine Preservation News .
  • Donations to our Annual Appeal campaign, or to our three dedicated program funds (Maine Heritage Education Fund, Preserve Maine Fund, and Maine Preservation Easements Fund).
  • Pledges may be made in monthly, quarterly or semi-annual installments.
  • Matching Gifts may be available from your employer. Contact your company’s human resources department to obtain a matching gift form. Matching gifts double the value of your donation!
  • Commemorative Gifts of Legacy are a way to honor the important people in your life. Your gift will be acknowledged and a card sent to the designated recipient.
  • Appreciated Securities or Property: Publicly traded stocks or real estate that have appreciated and have been held for more than twelve months offer two advantages. Capital gains are not paid on the appreciated value of the stock or real estate, and the current value qualifies as a charitable donation. To avoid the capital gains tax you must make the donation in the form of stock, which Maine Preservation will then sell. Some donors may be subject to the alternative minimum tax on the unrealized appreciation of capital gains. You should contact your tax advisory for assistance.

Other Ways You Can Help

Volunteer to make a difference!

We are working hard to save the historic places and spaces that define Maine's quality of life. Our five active programs (Advocacy, Outreach, Education, Easements and Publications) offer rewarding opportunities for nearly everyone, and include activities from site visits to writing and from fund raising events to office administration.

A gift of time to Maine Preservation is priceless.

We have many exciting and rewarding opportunities to volunteer your time and talents, both in and outside the office in downtown Portland. YOU can make an important difference in the history of our state - and have fun learning, too!

We can only achieve what we do with the help of enthusiastic and hard working volunteers.  By getting involved with our organization, either through a special project or as a long-term program volunteer, you will be giving back to your own community.

Please contact Karla Leandri Rider, Office Manager, at karla@mainepreservation.org to find out how you can expand your knowledge about historic preservation in Maine while making new friends and sharing your skills in a meaningful way.

Your help is also needed right at home.  "All preservation is local," as the saying goes.  Your involvement locally will do much to preserve and protect the irreplaceable landmarks in your own community - and will help strengthen the grassroots movement that has made historic preservation a powerful voice in communities across Maine and the country.  So make a call, attend a meeting, or just speak out for historic preservation - and make a difference right at home!  And remember to keep us informed about issues and activities in your community.

Contributions to Maine Preservation's Preserve Maine Fund provide direct assistance through small matching grants to help Most Endangered properties. Contributions are tax deductible and are appreciated in any size. Please mail to Maine Preservation, 500 Congress Street, 2nd Floor, Portland, ME 04101. For more information contact the office at (207) 775-3652.

As a nonprofit organization we rely greatly upon both your financial and volunteer support to help us achieve our program goals for historic preservation in Maine.

The financial support we receive from membership dues provides us with essential operating income. Additional donations to help fund specific programs are vital. Dedicated program funds have been created to help Maine's Most Endangered Historic Properties, Heritage Education program, and Easements.

Your donation is tax-deductible and deeply appreciated.
