First Order Fresnel Lens Seguin Island Light - Sagadahoc County

Year listed:  1999

Before                                                             Restored Seguin Island Light

Saved! Among Maine's many historic lighthouses, Seguin Island Light at the mouth of the Kennebec River, is unique as it houses the only First Order Fresnel Lens north of Block Island, Rhode Island. The steady white light at Seguin is visible for twenty-five miles, and is the only one in Maine with a fixed beacon. Fresnel Lens technology was developed in France by Augustin Fresnel in 1822 and became the dominant lens for lighthouses -- First Order lenses are huge and very rare.

The Coast Guard has agreed to retain the lens in working order rather than replace it with a steady solar-powered beacon that they had intended to install adjacent to the lighthouse. This victory is due in large part to the intervention of Senator Olympia Snowe and the Friends of Seguin.
