Old Town House - Parsonsfield (c. 1852) Year listed: 1997
Saved! This Greek Revival Style building, located near the center of this western York County town, once served as the town hall and the Selectman’s office. The hard work of the town advisory committee, R.O.O.T. for Improvement (Restore Our Old Townhouse), and countless other volunteers and contractors has paid off in its rehabilitation and restoration. Seven years after being placed on the endangered list, various fundraising efforts and monetary aid from the Town of Parsonsfield amounting to approximately $17,500 has allowed for a new exterior paint job, window restoration, and sill and furnace replacements. The old four-seat outhouse has even been replaced with a new electric composting toilet. Maine Preservation awarded the non-profit group a $500 matching grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation for a Building Conditions Assessment, conducted in 2001. Using this as a guide, a handful of other rehabilitation tasks remain, but the building is already being used as the voting seat and meeting place for civic groups such as R.O.O.T and the Citizens Advisory group. The Old Town House is successfully continuing to be the center of civic activity. To get involved or to make a donation, contact Barbara Korn, R.O.O.T. for Improvement, P.O. Box 523, Limerick, ME 04048. Calls may also be made to Diane Morrill, Town Selectwoman at (207) 625-4550.
