Stephen Coffin/Dixon House - Skidompha Library, Damariscotta

Year listed:  1998

Saved! The c.1805 Stephen Coffin/Dixon House located on Main Street in downtown Damariscotta, is a rare surviving example of a Federal-period house and attached store. The building was adapted for use as the local public library in 1922 with the adjacent c.1870 building, however, has outgrown the present combined space.

The Skidompha Library Board responded to pressure from preservationists and local citizens when it decided to allow the historic house to remain standing in its prominent location along Main Street and incorporate the building into the new expansion plan. The library no longer owns the building which now has been adapted to commercial office space.

For information on preservation in the Damariscotta region contact The Old Lincoln Preservation Society at P.O. Box 1364, Damariscotta, ME 04543.
