Saved! One of the most prominent historic buildings in Boothbay Harbor, the privately owned Opera House was threatened with demolition when the property owner pulled a demolition permit from the Town in 1999.   Built in 1894 by the Knights of Pythias, the Opera House has served many community functions in the past one hundred years; used as the Town Hall, served as the local gym and hosted graduations and movies.

The demolition permit expired and the building was

acquired by the non-profit group The Opera House at

Boothbay Harbor in August of 2003.   Currently

owned and operated by the non-profit, the building

has taken on a new life and has opened its doors to

eager theatre-goers as a place of entertainment.

The shops from the mini-mall transformation of the

1970s have been removed, opening up the

mezzanine and main floor of the auditorium.   Much

has been done to restore the building to its former

opera house grandeur, and the Opera House has

enjoyed many theatre seasons.
