Bar Harbor Club - Bar Harbor (c. 1929) Year listed: 1997
Before Bar Harbor Club today Saved! Constructed in 1929 and 1930, at the beginning of the Great Depression, the Bar Harbor Club was an exclusive seasonal waterfront oasis for the wealthy that included salt and fresh water swimming pools, tennis courts, locker rooms and a restaurant. Dances, sporting competitions and other games were regular events. The Club closed when the days of private clubs were over and the building sat empty, deteriorating for years. Tom Walsh of Ocean Properties purchased the building with the hopes of turning it into a conference center. Local opponents, however, raised concerns about the impact of a conference center on the neighborhood. This concern successfully halted any development of the building until the zoning proposal was finally accepted. In mid-2004 the five year careful restoration was completed and the old Bar Harbor Club is now a special event and conference space connected to the Harborside Hotel and Marina.
